The life of Virgil Abloh
Born 30th September 1980 in Rockford, Illinois.
1980Abloh is influenced by his mother who is a seamstress. She teaches him the tricks of the trade and he learns to sew at an early age.
ChildhoodSpends his spare time DJ'ing, shopping at the mall and skateboarding - but parents make sure he focusses on studies too.
ChildhoodGrows up worshipping Air Jordan's and the brand Supreme, which will later play a key role in influencing his collections.
ChildhoodAttends Boylan Catholic High School where he meets his future wife, Shannon. Graduates in 1998.
ChildhoodEnrols in a degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, which he later describes as "super-boring". "[My parents’] dream was to have a kid who graduated from college. So I was DJ-ing and skateboarding, and the least I could do was be an awesome kid.”
1999Starts running parties at local bars with his college roommate and future best man, Gabriel Stulman, where Abloh also DJ's. They use this venture to fund shopping trips, heading to the stores to buy new clothes.
1999Develops an obsession with GQ and stands out at college with his personal style and confidence. "He 'devoured magazines' like GQ and wasn’t afraid of wearing colours" Gabriel Stulman later recalled. “He had this Ralph Lauren leather jacket in college with a lion’s head emblazoned on the back and two neon-orange stripes. I would try to wear it, and it wouldn’t look right on me.”
1999Takes 'Introduction to Art History' course, learning about the Renaissance and Caravaggio. He realises he can apply his eye for design and creativity outside of engineering and architecture. “It flipped my head backward”.
2001Completes his degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
2002Abloh prints t-shirts at the same print shop as Kanye West's team and manages to set up a meeting with Kanye West's manager, John Monopoly. On the day of his gradution he skips his final critique to go to the meeting.
2002Impressed by his eye for design, West puts Abloh on the payroll of his agency, Donda (named after his Mother).
Abloh completes his masters degree in Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
2006Launches first fashion collaboration with Colette Paris on the 'Medallions en Bleu' t-shirt.
2008Works with Kanye West to create the merchandise for his his 'Glow in the Dark' tour.
Fails to secure an internship with Raf Simons.
Abloh and Kanye West intern at Fendi, in Rome. They earn $500 a month. Michael Burke, CEO of Fendi at the time, later said “I was really impressed with how they brought a whole new vibe to the studio and were disruptive in the best way”.
2009Opens the RSVP Gallery in Chicago with Don Crawley, aka Chicago's "Don C", a ubiquitous name in sneaker and streetwear culture.
2009Abloh art directs the album 'Watch the Throne' by Jay-Z and Kanye West, an achievement that earns him a Grammy nomination.
2011Abloh launches his first brand, Pyrex Vision, in New York. He purchases marked down Ralph Lauren flannel shirts for $40 each and screen prints them with the word Pyrex and the number 23, a homage to his childhood hero, Michael Jordan. They sell for $550 a piece.
2012Abloh leaves Pyrex Vision and founds Off White, which is based in Milan.
2013Joins DJ crew Been Trill.
2013Abloh launches 'Off White womens' and previews it at Paris Fashion Week.
2014Off White is nominated and named as a finalist for the 'LVMH Prize'. The brand loses out to Givenchy.
2015Abloh's womenswear gains popularity when Beyonce wears an Off White palm print sweatshirt.
2015Abloh opens his first concept store in Tokyo. The store contains water coolers with branded Off White plastic cups. Such was Off White's popularity that the cups went onto the reseller market.
2016Collaborates on a project with Nike that was very close to his heart. As a child he was obsessed with the Nike Air Jordan. Now Nike and Off White work together to produce 'The Ten' - they become massively desirable and start being resold for far more than their original selling price.
2017Off-White wins the Urban Luxe Awards.
2017Raf Simons slates Off White as being "uninspiring".
2017Named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time.
2018Abloh is now named the new Menswear Director of Louis Vuitton.
2018With such a busy schedule, he moves to Chicago's Lincoln Park and travels around 350,000 miles a year for his work.
2018Following his sold-out Harvard lecture last October, Abloh is releasing a book that covers its content, called "Insert Complicated Title Here".
2018Abloh's first Louis Vuitton collection will be released in June 2018 at the men's fashion week in Paris Fashion.
